In today’s society there are three forms of languages:

informal, (slang and speech used among friends)

formal, (standard English) and

technical (specialized language usually dealing with specific field.)

Special speech communities are becoming influenced more often by the speaker’s gender and culture.

In reaction to negative connotations more attention is being given to the development of nonsexist language usage.

There are five basic verbal skills that are used everyday:

  1. Telling stories,
  2. Giving directions or descriptions,
  3. Handling phone calls,
  4. Asking questions, and
  5. Managing personal introductions.
