I.   Introduction to Verbal Communication

Verbal communication refers to the spoken or written words you send or receive when communicating.

·       

The Denotative meaning for a snake is a scaly, limbless, long-bodied reptile

·        Connotative meanings are rival gang symbol

·        treacherous person

·        Evil

·        Pet

·        And source of meat

II.      Types of  Verbal Communication

Formal versus informal language, and technical language.

A.     Formal versus Informal Language

1.     Formal language- refers to the use of Standard English with careful pronunciation and full sentences.

2.    

Informal Language- is more of a relaxed language, usually used among friends or in causal situations.

3.     Slang- refers to very informal language that is unique to a particular group and changes frequently.

B.     Technical Language

1.     Technical Language refers to specialized language used by people with expertise in a particular field.

2.     Insiders Versus Outsiders: Whether you are treated as an insider or outsider depends upon how much you know about a certain topic, culture, or workplace.
